Water, Light and the Identity of the City of Springs

Water shapes the identity of Bad Vilbel. The city’s bubbling springs provide the inspiration for a light sculpture that translates this characteristic motif into a contemporary artistic form. At the same time, the design draws on the visual language of the Bad Vilbel logo, developing it further as an independent spatial symbol.

Originally conceived as a wayfinding element along the route from the new railway station to the town hall, the sculpture also has the potential to be installed at different locations throughout the city.

Water Becomes Light

The sculpture, made of polished stainless steel, interprets the movement and form of water fountains. During the day, its surface reflects the light, colours and movements of the surrounding urban environment, continuously transforming its appearance.

After dark, the sculpture is brought to life by integrated LED strip lighting. Light, form and material merge to create a distinctive presence in the urban space – an atmospheric accent and an identity-defining symbol for Bad Vilbel.

The sculpture can be used individually or as part of a group, allowing the motif of the spring to be experienced again and again in different locations throughout the city.

Individually Designed Light Sculptures

Individually designed light sculptures are an expression of Ruairí O’Brien’s Storytelling Architecture. As artistic interventions in public space, they create identity, communicate stories and information, establish spatial accents, and invite people to explore and reflect.

They bring together the three fields of the studio – architecture, light and spatial art – in independent objects developed from the character and history of each particular place. In this way, they create distinctive landmarks that shape spaces and give them a unique identity, even after dark.
