RUAIRI O'BRIEN. O'Brien's architectural lighting design practice has expertise in both daylight and artificial light. Light and color concepts, master planning, unique lighting fixtures, artistic installations and light sculptures are all part of the wide range of services on offer.
Ruairí O'Brien studied architecture and light at Universities in London, Edinburgh and New York.
O’Brien worked for several architectural firms in England, USA and Germany before setting up his own design office Ruairí O'Brien. Architektur. Licht. Raumkunst. in Dresden, Germany in 1995.
In 2010 O’Brien established the Lighting design studio ARCHEVOLUCIO in London and Dresden. Renamed RUAIRÍ O'BRIEN. LIGHTING DESIGN. in 2016
O’Brien’s interdisciplinary work covers a broad spectrum of lighting areas; the lighting of exteriors and interiors for public/private buildings, market squares and public spaces, city master planning, sustainable lighting concepts for the built environment and unique one off lighting fixtures.
O'Brien’s work in lighting design fuses art with high tech in order to achieve works of universal quality where his understanding of the science of engineering blends with his extensive knowledge of light, architecture and art in both theory and practice.
O’Brien creates innovative solutions that are energy conscious, an expression of "our times" or the "Zeitgeist" in which we live and yet “respect the heritage” that has made us.
O’Brien has also worked on a number of innovative light art projects, sculptures and installations. He initiated the light poetry festival “Light and Word” in Dresden in 2003.
As a visiting professor for Architecture and Light at the University in Wismar, northern Germany, O'Brien was a co-initiator of the international master’s degree for Architectural Lighting Design, which was the first of its kind in Europe. During his time in Wismar he helped guide the program to full accreditation in 2005.
O’Brien has also taught lighting design and architecture at several other Universities in Germany, Czech Republic and Russia.
2014 O'Brien founded the “Mobile School of Lighting Design”, a pioneering project whose aim is to bring the education of lighting design and the importance of light in architecure to a global public in a new and innovative way.
Ruairí OBrien is a founding member and vice president of the in 2014 initiated Federation of International Lighting Designers (FILD).
